Photographer Robin Schwartz has been photographing her daughter, Amelia, now thirteen, in the company of animals for over a decade. Amelia, Robin says, is a natural; however, her daughter favors certain critters over others. According to a March 2012 New York Times feature, “She says she connects with most of the animals, though admits the spark just wasn’t there with a sloth.”

Once, KM and I made a kite out of a trash bag and a pair of chopsticks (it was probably an Asian-themed day at the dhall). We flew the kite in Cambridge Common, and it was one of the happiest days of my life. (via Make Your Own Kite on The Etsy Blog)

Could Talking Eliminate the Income Gap in Learning Ability?:

By the time a poor child is 1 year old, she has most likely already fallen behind middle-class children in her ability to talk, understand and learn. The gap between poor children and wealthier ones widens each year, and by high school it has become a chasm.

But what is it about poverty that limits a child’s ability to learn? Betty Hart and Todd Risley suggest:

… the key to early learning is talking — specifically, a child’s exposure to language spoken by parents and caretakers from birth to age 3, the more the better.

Children whose families were on welfare heard about 600 words per hour. Working-class children heard 1,200 words per hour, and children from professional families heard 2,100 words. By age 3, a poor child would have heard 30 million fewer words in his home environment than a child from a professional family. And the disparity mattered: the greater the number of words children heard from their parents or caregivers before they were 3, the higher their IQ and the better they did in school.

That’s huge. Why is there such a big difference? Meredith Rowe suggests that poorer mothers “tend to depend on friends and relatives for parenting advice, who may not be up on the latest data.“ Or… it could be even simpler (as a WSJ op-ed suggests_: wealthier women can afford to stay at home and spend more time with their children.

Last Saturday, I was walking up Sutter when a white van in the street started pulling away from the curb. This action produced a mildly-annoying scrapping sound: the van had trapped a traffic cone under its front wheel.

As a longtime cone advocate — both traffic (see below) and sno — it’s my sworn duty to protect cones. (No, really, they make us take an oath over the Code of Conesyrabi. It’s, like, so outdated.)

I ran up to the van driver’s window, waving my arms urgently. STOP! PLEASE STOP, SIR! When he finally braked, I leapt to free the cone, with whom I have no relation, and gracefully tossed him to safety.

A witness proclaimed, “YOU’RE GOOD [gibberish],” from his seat on the sidewalk. Yet others say I am a hero. Nay, my actions that day merely make me a good person forever.
